by Mark Maxwell Abushady, NYC Film What a great documentary! Yes, ‘Over 90’ has what you would expect from a film so titled; namely, interviews with active, involved seniors, but there is a nice cross section of people, some married, some single, some employed, some in school, with just enough time spent on each to get a feel for their ‘secrets’ to being healthy and happy nonagenarians (mind you, there are a couple of folks over 100 years of age interviewed as well). Beyond being a feel-good film, this also reminds us that activity and interest is key to a long-lived and well-lived life. Recommended.
Music The liner notes suggest the use of this CD as “a powerful conscious experience for you and your baby.” That seems entirely possible, as the cuts are joyous and uplifting, inviting movement, laughter and bonding between parent and baby. Indeed, I wished I had a little one bouncing on my knee during many of the songs! Gentle vocals, and ever-present percussion consisting of djembe, conga, djun djun, ocean drum, bongo, agogo, bell, cowbell, woodblock and more define this album. Percussive elements are lively, yet never jarring or out of mix with the other elements, while the lyrics are spiritual, positive, and affirmative in nature (Beauty is within me, God lives deep inside me, Love grows bright within me, I know who I am). A very special offering.
Dream – A Liquid Mind Experience
Mr. Wild refers to his ‘Liquid Mind’ series of releases, of which Dream is here reviewed, as ‘sedative music.’ I think the term apropos. The setting in which I experienced Dream was a fairly busy one at a peak hour of the day. Even so, I found myself deeply relaxed and just about nodded off several times. The music is slow . . . very slow. It took me a good few minutes to slow down my own inner pace, but it did indeed happen. The compositions are 3 in number, and timed (10, 20, and 30 minutes) to make them even more useful for timed rest or meditative periods. I must say that I am impressed with the effectiveness of Mr. Wild’s music. Dream will become a CD I’m sure to make use of over and over again.
. . . and Love Rages On! This album starts out with a striking, uplifting cut consisting of children’s chorus (‘The Chorus of Light’), various percussives, celtic pipes and strings. This immediately begged another listen. Throughout the album, children’s choirs from around the world are featured, singing in several languages and phonetics meant to express that which can’t be expressed in words. Songs weave in and out of all sorts of different musical traditions – Celtic, Indian, Polynesian, African influences play across the selections, all of which are well-produced and balanced. Richard Gannaway and Jay Oliver’s compositions are gloriously harmonious and showcase the children’s voices wonderfully. Miriam Stockley (formerly of Adiemus) contributes her wide ranging and versatile voice to the mix. A very nice offering.
